Day 23: Are You A Winner?

Written by Nelson Jones

It is said in professional sports that it is the character players who show up in the tough games to get the tough wins! I think one of the great misunderstandings about impact is to think that it is heavily weighted on our gifts and talents when it is fundamentally a character measurement. Whether it is sports, entertainment, business, there are more people with talent on the rubbish pile that discovered too late that without character talent has a short lifespan!

Saul was chosen king of Israel because of his stature and Noble looks but soon ended up on the rubbish pile because of huge flaws in his character!

In 1 Samuel 15:26 Samuel the prophet says to Saul;

"You have rejected the word of the Lord, and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!"

Saul did not fail in the moral law as David did, he failed in obeying God's specific word to him so that it was not possible to fulfill the impact God had for him. David failed the moral law but didn’t disobey God’s specific word to him and he was able to carry out God’s purposes for his life.

The words that God spoke to Samuel about the choosing of David would be great to follow for anyone in choosing their team or people around them.

"Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

- 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)

He says he’s choosing character, that’s what God looks at for impact.

David failed morally but not in his heart! Saul failed in his heart but not morally! Yes, the players who play with their heart win the tough games, that is why we call them character players, their impact shows up when you need it the most.

Meditation: Despite all of my struggles, am I keeping my heart towards the Lord, in a position to hear and respond?
