Breakthrough 93: Day 19

Written by Pastor Nelson Jones
On one occasion, Jesus had a discussion with his disciples on a couple of tabloid headlines of the day.

"About this time Jesus was informed that Pilate had murdered some people from Galilee as they were offering sacrifices at the temple. Do you think those Galilean's were worst sinners than all the other people from Galilee?" Jesus asked. "is that why they suffered? Not at all! And you will perish, too, unless you repent of your sins and turn to God. And what about 18 people who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Were they the worst sinners in Jerusalem? No, and I tell you again that unless you repent, you will perish, too."
Luke 13:1-5 NLT

Jesus is using the headlines of the day to illustrate the point that we cannot make personal tragedies the subject of God's judgment. Some people find it hard to go to God when they need to in times of trouble because they feel like God is punishing them! Also, to view people that go through tragedies as being judged, places us in a very untenable position. We can believe that they deserved it and we don't! These positions lead us to a disconnect from God and people when we need it the most! The disciples could easily have found themselves not caring about people that go through things, simply because somehow, they deserved it and we didn't! Human relationships work best when we keep people in the human category, including ourselves!

"For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard"
Romans 3:23 NLT

He makes the point that we all deserve judgement and that repentance is the way out for all! We all need a gardener who says,

"Sir, give it one more chance."
Luke 13:8 NLT
