Put On Your Thinking Cap
I grew up in an environment of sarcasm. One of the phrases I remember from my high school days was; “Use your head for something more than a hat hanger!” Thinking back this makes me smile because most of my peers did not wear hats, we preferred to let our long locks flow.
Another saying from my childhood, I probably heard it, day one of grade one was; “Ok children everyone put your thinking caps on”, as my teacher Mrs. Vaughn, pretended to tie an imaginary cap under her chin. No, problem with the hair thing then I was wearing a crew cut under my imaginary cap.
Both these sayings ,are wonderful metaphors that describe the purpose and process of thinking. Now, I wonder about the flawed belief, some people have that states; “really great ideas fall from the sky“. Do I believe God can give us a timely idea? Of course, that’s how the Holy Spirit operates, but they do not drop from the sky! We are created wonderfully complex, so we engage our thinking the creative idea comes from God through the wonderfully complex minds that he has miraculously given us and we use it.
My point is don’t wait for something to just happen when you’re stuck needing a great idea. Once again present yourself to God trust him and don’t be afraid to use your God gifted “hat hanger”.
Dear friends, God is good. So I beg you to offer your bodies to him as a living sacrifice, pure and pleasing. That’s the most sensible way to serve God. Don’t be like the people of this world, but let God change the way you think. Then you will know how to do everything that is good and pleasing to him.
Romans 12:1-2 (CEV)
P.S. Here’s a great idea. Invite some friends, neighbours or co-workers to People’s Christmas Banquet for a real good time. It will probably change their minds about what they think about church and you!
